Demo Tape (8 songs)
A more ironically-named ensemble this side of Newton surely does not exist.
.
Unless the baby in question uses the surrealist manifesto as a teething ring.
.
A good deal of this is like an inspired cross between Native Tongue and GingerButkis, jam-packed with contrarian entertainment values.
.
You might almost call it a calculated insult to mainstream sensibilities, except that there doesn't seem to be anything particularly calculated about it.
.
Meticulously loony, in a way that barely falls short of grandiose.
.
Pick hit: "Pure Imagination" - Like Frank Zappa to the power of Firesign Theatre.

Demo Tape
Some bands go into a garage and practice all day long.
.
This band built a chemistry set and decided to do experiments all day long.
.
Make no mistake, Soothing Sounds For Baby is a garage band, but like true artists, they %#@! up the regular rock and roll thing for a while.
.
Their clipped numbers hold enough musical muscle to keep things focused, but you gotta stay with 'em or they'll leave you with your head spinning.
.
A very different kind of band.

Top of the Kong
(w/ The Fully Celebrated Orchestra and Deluxx) 8/24/93
The Top of the Kong (Cambridge) is a great space for live music!
.
It exudes a very intimate loft vibe. This is due, in part, to the lack of a formal stage.
.
Performers simply set up in a corner and wail away.
.
Soothing Sounds For Baby started shortly after the doors opened.
.
This trio plays a jagged brand of weird funk.
.
Situated midway between Zappa's intellectualism and Captain Beefheart's primitivism.
.
Through the performance they traded instruments, never once losing momentum or seeming awkward.
(James Bennett - The Noise 9/93)
The Causeway
(Boston, MA - 2/4/94)
Well, I'm here real early (for the Buck Pets) and it finally pays off.
.
Soothing Sounds For Baby are on and the place is totally focused on them.
.
It's funny to see a whole group of people paying such close attention to a band, but Soothing Sounds For Baby deserved the attention.
.
They have this twisted sense to their music; it's jazz, it's rock, it's punk, it's...broadway show tunes.
.
Yes, they pull out a killer number from West Side Story (was it "Cool Boy, Crazy Boy" or "When You're a Jet?"
.
Doesn't matter.
.
The idea was enthralling enough).
.
And besides knowing what to play, they know HOW to play.
.
Freaky riffs and flutters of guitar notes rang out frequently, big sounds from his little amp.
.
Sounds like hours and hours of practice. Soothing Sounds For baby really turned my ear tonight.
.
They had all the pieces together for a fun and rewarding set, making it a good idea to get out early tonight.
